Here we were at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park!

Total of 9 volunteers of all ages from the Green Volunteers gathered at Kallang-Ang Mo Kio Park on 4th May, Saturday morning!  The Green Volunteers are joining Nparks and the residents who live around the park to help weed away the exotic species of plants and snails near the inlet of the waterways.

 We are very happy to see our young volunteer Jia Le again this time despite the school exams are drawing closer, his parents still bring him along!

Jia Le, is helping to sieve out the cigarette buds and apple snails.  These fresh water snails is an alien species in Singapore and it can be found in our common waterways and reservoirs.  You may find the pink cluster of eggs on the rocks.

Your chance to volunteer at Tampines Eco Park

We are having a planting session on Saturday (27th July 2013) morning at Tampines Eco Park.  The volunteering activity includes some weeding and watering.  The aim is to attract butterflies.  Volunteers who are interested to help with the gardening session could email whitecokatoo@gmail.com and grant@singapore.com with name and phone number.

We will be meeting outside the Tampines MRT station (Exit B) at 9.30 am on 27th July and will be walking over to the park.  The activity will end at around 12.30 pm.

Remember to bring drinking water, hat and wear comfortable clothing!

Saturday morning at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio park

As usual, we get our hands busy and feet wet.  9 of us gathered at Kallang-Ang Mo Kio park on a Saturday morning!  We got our hands busy by removing the Wild Tamarind trees (Leucaena leucocephala) near the waterways.  Wild Tamarind trees are considered a invasive species and a weed.  Best way to prevent them from growing is to removing them when they are young.

Cheerful Jia Le was busy with his parents sieving the apple snails (Pomacea species).  It is also another invasive species that commonly seen in our waterways.

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park Green Activities in May

Come May, there will be green activities every Saturday on 4, 11, 18 and 25 May 2013 at the Bishan-Ang mo Kio Park. Come and enjoy nature with your friends and families. Happy Api Api

With help from Jean Curry, the teacher from Overseas Family School and her student volunteers, we cleaned up Sg Api Api on a hot Saturday. We cleared lots of junk and litter in the mangroves including lots of used straws and lighters.

Weekend gardening @ Tampines Eco Park

Saturday, 23rd March was our 3rd round helping at the Tampines Eco park.  Yes, it is The Green Volunteers who do not mind getting our hands dirty and feet wet and yet in the morning when many people are still asleep.  This time, 13 staff from Deutsche Bank, Singapore and about 16 students from the NUS Raffles Hall planted 50 odd butterfly attracting plants.  The planting activity ended at about 1 pm where we head off for lunch after that.

 

We also have our youngest volunteer, Jia Le, 6, who loves to hang out under the sun in the garden and parks.  Thanks to his mum and dad who believe in bringing up children close with nature instead of spending time on computer games at home.

The picture above is Jia Le on the left was attended by a Nparks intern, Jen who placed different sizes of snails on his palm.  We wish that more parents who can also nurture their children like Jia  Le.

We will be having our next community volunteering programme at Kallang River @ Bishan - Ang Mo Kio Park in early May!  Nevertheless, we also have our regular weekend gardening at Pasir Park.  We will keep you posted on our blog.

Volunteers for 2013

Happy New Year everyone! It's back to the grind; how's 2013 so far? Anyway we just got back from our annual pilgrimage in Chiangmai. If you want to get back in nature, join us this SATURDAY 5 January at 10am to 1pm at Pasir Ris Park - Butterfly Garden (Carpark C). In fact do volunteer with us on a weekly basis.
