Gardening at Tampines Eco Green

Gardening at Tampines Eco Green (our butterfly garden), 28th September, Saturday.  Meet 9.30 am sharp at Tampines MRT station.  We should be done by on  1pm.  Volunteers are advised to bring along their own drinking water and hat and raincoat/umbrella in case of rain.

Butterfly walk

5 October, Saturday, 6th October, Sunday meet 9 am sharp at our butterfly garden at Pasir Ris Park.  Walk should be done by 11.30 am, those who wish can stay back to water and tend to garden.  Please email Grace (whitecokatoo@gmail.com) with your name, mobile number and number of people coming.  Bring drinking water, hat or umbrella.

Temasek Hall – NUS

We are working with their green club (Temasek Green) to do more joint green activities.  Here’s their new logo.  We just helped them to do a butterfly wall mural.  Look out for the pictures. 

MRT through MacRitchie

By now, most of you have heard that there is a proposal to run a MRT line through MacRitchie.  This will badly damage a pristine environment and destroy much biodiversity and is totally unacceptable.  There are alternate sensible plans to divert this proposed line so it will not impact this fragile and sensitive environment – this diversion will incur about an additional 7 km of rail and an extra 4 minutes in arrival time – a very small price to pay to avoid damaging this precious environment.

A study is presently being conducted to see the environmental impact on this area should these proposals go ahead.  To create more awareness and to educate the public on what we stand to lose, we are looking for young people to train as nature guides at MacRitchie.  This training will be done by Subaraj, a very experienced nature guide/trainer and a committed environmentalist.  All participants are expected to spend 3-4 hours on 2 weekends days a month, until at least December, at MacRitchie, talking to the public about the forest and making them aware of the actual truth of having the CRL going through the nature reserve.  Details of the first walk is as follows:

Meeting place:  Junction of Adam Rd/Sime Rd (north side) at 8.30am

Tampines Eco Green Park with volunteers from Temasek Poly

Despite the rainy morning, close to 30 students from Temasek Polytechnic Community Service Club all geared up to help at the Tampines Eco Green Park with us on a Saturday morning.  As soon as we arrived at the park, Grant gave a quick briefing and demonstration on how to clear the weeds by using the spade.

We were glad that the weather was cooling enough for us to work and even for our Muslim volunteers who are fasting.  Some of the main plants we planted were Seven Golden Candlesticks (Cassia alata), Rattlebox pea (Crotalaria retusa) and Crown flower (Calotropis gigantea). 

The plant guards were added to protect the saplings from falling and to prevent grass cutters from cutting the plants
